Veterans can interview for jobs, get legal help, snag a free haircut and get a free lunch to boot in Glendale on Saturday.
The eighth annual Stand Up for Veterans is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Arizona Christian University, located at the southeast corner of Greenway Road and 59th Avenue. Decades ago, the campus was the site of Thunderbird Air Field, which trained air cadets during World War II.
Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers says the event is open to veterans, their spouses, families and active military.
“Our No. 1 and only focus is helping veterans. Period,” he said. Maybe they have issues with MVD or they want to get a COVID or flu shot; there are so many opportunities that are at this event.
Weiers helped launched the event in 2013. His office estimates they’ve since helped upward of 3,000 people.
Weiers said he expects more than 400 people to attend for two reasons: joining forces with the Stand Down for Veterans organization, and veterans traveling from different cities for the annual gathering.
“It’s pretty crazy, the vets come from everywhere, so it’s not uncommon between the veterans and their spouses, to have more than 400 people helped at our last event,” he said.
The mayor said he was grateful for the community support in helping veterans and their families.
The event is primarily funded by a grant from the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, with numerous organizations chipping in to coordinate and provide services.
Veterans will find an array of services available to them.
Among the services, veterans can talk with court officials to provide on-site adjudication for pending misdemeanor and traffic cases.
We can help veterans with drivers licenses suspended due to failure to resolve fines and fees and to get suspensions lifted by doing community restitution. This is an opportunity to restore driving privileges and to get veterans back to work,” said Glendale City Court Presiding Judge Nicholas DiPiazza.
Glendale staffers will provide transportation from the event to nearby Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park for the community work service project.
The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division will have people at the event to advise veterans about reinstating driving privileges and other title and license issues. The Glendale’s Prosecutors Office and State Bar of Arizona members will be available to consult with veterans on civil matters, while attorneys from the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office will be there to discuss felony matters.
