LEOMINSTER — Kimberlly Santiago recently opened her own business, Sleek Salon at 18 Main St. downtown, following in her mother’s entrepreneurial footsteps.
Santiago, a Leominster High School class of 2019 graduate, has lived in the city most of her life. While she personally has not worked in a salon up until now, she does lash extensions full time and garnered salon and business ownership wisdom from her mother, who did hair for 20 years and owned two salons in Maynard and Wellesley.
Santiago, 20, said she was inspired to open Sleek last year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and worked hard to bring her vision to fruition in the space that is warm and welcoming.
“I had developed a dream of running a full-service salon here in my hometown to make it a ‘one stop shop’ for busy women who make it a point to keep up with their self-care even when it doesn’t seem to fit in their schedule,” she said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the salon on Friday that marked the official opening of Santiago’s endeavor “went great,” she said. Mayor Dean Mazzarella attended the celebration along with other city hall staff members.
“The staff made me feel so welcomed and proud of the place I opened,” Santiago said. “We are finally open, and it has already been so successful. Our reviews on Google are amazing and the community has been so welcoming. I am so grateful.”
Sleek is a full-service salon offering a wide variety of services including haircuts for all ages including kids, color and highlights, waxing and facials, lash extensions, and nail options such as full acrylic sets.
“What I feel sets Sleek Salon apart from the other salons here in Leominster is that not only are we a full service salon here in the heart of the town but the salon is also filled with young entrepreneur women who took a leap of faith at a very young age and are now doing very well thanks to the support we have been receiving from everyone here in Leominster,” Santiago said of the team she has built.
When asked what she enjoys most about owning her own business, she said having the freedom to really make it her own.
“I can customize everything to fit my personality, from the way the salon is decorated to the girls I work with,” Santiago said.
Her future goals for the salon are to “hopefully continue running for many more years” and give more women the chance to flourish and thrive right along with her. As such, booth rentals are available.
“I want to give many other women the opportunity to start their own business and work for themselves here in the salon with the wonderful women that work here already,” Santiago said.
She said she is grateful for the support she has received from her family, friends and the growing client base, as well as the greater community as she launches her business.
“I’d like to thank the community for being so welcoming and for trusting us with your self-care,” Santiago said. “Our priority is always to satisfy the customer and for them to feel safe and trusting in the hands of those here at Sleek Salon.”
