It’s come to our attention that the three main characters in Hulu’s hit TV series “Only Murders in the Building” have a boatload of connections to locales across Long Island.
First off, Selena Gomez’s character, Mabel Mora, is originally from Bayport. Then there’s Steve Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage, a semi-retired actor whose sister lives in Patchogue.
And finally, Martin Short‘s Oliver Putnam, a financially struggling Broadway director, reminisces about that time he drank too much and threw up in a pool at a wedding on the North Shore.
In the whodunit comedy series, the three characters are strangers brought together by their mutual obsession of a true crime podcast and an unsolved murder that occurred in their Upper West Side luxury apartment building. Gomez, Martin and Short have each garnered rave reviews for their performances.
In the fifth episode of the series’ debut season, Gomez’s Mabel, who was friends with the murder victim, visits her hometown. Well, sort of. The script may have her in the fictional Surf Shop Tattoo Studio in Bayport, but the scene was filmed in Lola Star’s Rockaway on 116th Street in Rockaway Park.

“My first time out of Manhattan in five years, and we’re going to Long Island,” Martin’s Charles-Haden laments while driving in a car and headed east on the Long Island Expressway with Short’s Oliver. “I got a sister in Patchogue. She has four daughters — all with D names.
“Dawn, Danielle, Dina and Dagmar,” he adds, pronouncing the names with an exaggerated Long Island accent. “The five of them are always trying to set me up with a hairdresser.”
Short’s character replies with a wild tale of riding an elephant at a wedding in Syosset while getting so drunk he ended up sick and vomiting in a pool.
“I have to admit, I’ve certainly had my share of Long Island shenanigans,” Short’s Oliver says.
From there, the Long Island content of the conversation spirals downward, with Short’s character saying he caught syphilis in South Setauket and Martin’s Charles-Haden noting that he got crabs in Massapequa.
Aside from the trio’s Long Island excursion, most of the show takes place in or near their Manhattan apartment building called The Arconia. The show’s first 10 episodes aired weekly this fall and are now available for binge-watching.
Hulu has announced that “Only Murders in the Building” will be back for a second season.
