The Retail Alliance, a regional nonprofit association that advocates for retailers and small businesses, announced the winners of this year’s Retailer of the Year awards. They are 71 businesses across 35 categories in both South Hampton Roads and the Peninsula.
“During the last two years, the pandemic has created challenges for all retailers,” Retail Alliance President and CEO Ray Mattes said. “We are so proud of all our retailers who have been able to overcome those challenges and hurdles and wish we could give each and every one of them a Retailer of the Year award.”
The honorees were selected through peer voting based on a business’s customer service, reputation, aesthetics, and community involvement.
The Retail Alliance selected Taylor’s Do it Center as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree. Founded in 1927, Taylor’s Do it Centers are a chain of family-owned and locally operated independent hardware stores, offering hardware, lumber and building materials in 11 locations throughout Hampton Roads and North Carolina.
The award recognizes retailers that have excellent customer service, are engaged with the community, have a great reputation, are excellent at visual merchandising and store aesthetics, and have longevity, Mattes said. “We felt that Taylor’s hits all five of these criteria. They have been around for nearly a hundred years stemming from one of the area’s oldest businesses, Fuel, Feed & Building Supplies.”
