GODFREY – A business that began as a midlife crisis is celebrating a milestone this month in Godfrey.
My Time Day Spa was founded in 2006 when friends Diane Sconce and Kori Sloan, who had worked together at other salons for five years, decided to open a place of their own.
“When we first started 15 years ago we were in a little, bitty location and it was just me and her, and we were next door to my friends’ hair salons,” Sconce said. “She was the massage therapist and I was the esthetician.”
In 2010 the all-female business moved to its current location at 13 Rosa Ave. and added staff. The business now includes Sconce, two massage therapists, four hair stylists, a nail technician and a hair extension specialist. Sloan left the business several years ago to focus on her family.
“This was my midlife crisis,” Sconce said. “I was a legal secretary for 16 years but I always wanted to get into the skin care business. It was a passion of mine, something I always wanted to do.
“Finally in my mid-thirties I did it, I went back to school and got my esthetic’s license and started this,” Sconce said. “It was the best decision I ever made; I absolutely love it.”
Good decision or no, starting a small business was a gamble, and Sconce and Sloan knew it.
“We both talked to our husbands at length. We discussed if this fails are we going to be OK, what are we going to do,” Sconce said. “Then right away we went through the recession in 2007-2008 and business was very slow, and that was very scary.”
But My Time Day Spa has survived and thrived, and Sconce counts many clients who have been with her for the business’ entire 15 years. Most of the women who work in the spa have also been there a long time, Sconce said.
My Time Day Spa offers numerous types of massages, hair care, facials of all kinds, and specialty services such as dark eye circle therapy, body polish, cellulite and inch loss treatments, scalp treatment, ear candling, hand or foot massages, eyelash extensions, waxing, makeup and nail services.
Sometimes the spa workers are slightly jealous of the clients.
“I would love to trade every day with everybody; all of us girls trade with each other,” Sconce said. “But all of our schedules are so crazy we are hardly ever able to get in ourselves to get a treatment. But whenever we can it’s wonderful.”
Sconce is grateful for the community support she has received the past 15 years. And the greatest praise she can receive?
“That it’s worth every penny,” Sconce said. “Because people in this area work very hard for their money, and people don’t have to spend their money by coming here. But they choose to do it because they enjoy it so much.”
