Loving the skin you’re in – Gainesville Sun

An esthetician stepped out on faith to launch her business and pursue her passion in skincare.
Esthetician Karen Campbell launched her skincare business Total Body Skincare located at 14 E. University Ave., Suite 204, during the COVID-19 pandemic when she was faced with the daunting reality of unemployment.
“I was faced with the devastating reality that my main source of income would be taken away from me and I had to do something,” Campbell said. “With nothing to lose, I stepped out on faith and started my waxing business.”
Estheticians are state-licensed skin care professionals who have been trained through apprenticeships or formal esthetics programs to perform treatments that promote the health and beauty of the skin, including procedures like waxing and peels, while also educating clients on cleansing, diet, and the application of skin-care products at-home, according to EstheticiansEDU.org.
Born and raised in Tallahassee, Campbell studied esthetics at North Florida Cosmetology Institute and became a licensed esthetician in 2014. She then began working at a waxing facility called Brazil’s waxing center for about five years and from there she ventured out into certified nursing assistant (CNA) work at a local Gainesville assisted living facility for about nine months.
With her expertise and perseverance, Campbell was determined to continue her passion as an esthetician when she was going to be laid off as a pedicurist at a local spa and salon.
“The importance of a consistent skin care routine is that it makes you confident in your own skin and helps you to feel and look good which brings happiness and joy to your life and everyone around you,” Campbell said.
Her business offers total body waxing, teeth whitening, pedicures and skin care services to help reduce hair growth, hyperpigmentation, discoloration and ingrown hairs.
She also has a service called Bra’Jacial which consists of a full Brazilian immediately followed by a mini vajacial, a facial for your upper mound near the torso and bikini area, which costs $110.
Customers receive $15 off their first Brazilian wax. A total body wax is $350 for women and $400 for Men.
Teeth whitening services range from $85 for a 30 minute session to $160 for an hour session.
“I want my guests to leave feeling like royalty and to love their experience so much that they tell 10 of their friends,” Campbell said.
Jayde Adams said she was referred to Total Body Skincare by a friend and said from her first visit she knew she wanted to visit again.
“Karen is one of the sweetest persons I’ve ever met,” Adams said. “She greets her clients with a very warm welcome by having positive and uplifting energy each and every time I visit.”
Adams said she enjoyed the services Total Body Skincare provides and shared that taking care of your skin is important.
She said that during her service, Campbell makes every client feel safe and comfortable by holding conversations the entire time while also informing them what products she is using on their skin and explains the benefits of those products.
“Self care is important because it allows you to appreciate and love yourself even more,” Adams said. “Caring for yourself is also important to maintain emotional and mental health. When you’re taking care of yourself, you feel better about yourself.”
Campbell’s future plans are to add a few services such as yoni steaming and wood therapy treatments and to expand to a bigger location in Gainesville and eventually venture out to other cities in the state.
The business is appointment-based only but accepts walk-ins every Tuesday.
Total Body Skincare is open on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
