When the doctor said I would lose my hair, it weirdly didn’t frighten me at first. Maybe I was so overwhelmed at my cancer diagnosis that it was a step too far for my brain to compute. Perhaps my straight brunette hair has always been so low-maintenance that I didn’t realise how much it meant to me. Or it could have been that I learnt about scalp-cooling technology, known as the “cold cap”, which can reduce hair loss, and I thought that would prevent it. I was wrong.
It came away in strands at first, and then clumps. For weeks I was losing a lot of hair (with Jonathan subtly attempting to dispose of it so I didn’t have to see), but I didn’t look
