When you think of taking a holiday or some rest, most people would think it means more than two weeks a year but Canberra’s Kelsey-Lee Barber is hunting gold next year to complete her medal set – so two weeks it is.
Barber is fresh off an Olympic bronze medal and silver in the Diamond League, and is in the early days of her quarantine stint in Perth. However, she said she did not want those 14 days to count as her rest.
“It’ll be downtime, definitely, but I want to maintain some level of activity, while we’re in the rooms,” she said.
“So that when we leave quarantine, I can actually have some time to have a holiday and have a break from athletics.”
It was touch and go for the javelin thrower in her Tokyo preliminary event, waiting until her final throw to secure a spot in the finals, and eventually go on to take third.

Barber finished 28th in Rio and was determined to take a medal in 2020. The Commonwealth Games silver medalist said her mental preparedness, built through years of reflecting on her performance, got her over the line last month.
“I know what I experienced in Rio and, as much as anything, the devastation of where I’d placed there. I just sort of said, ‘this is not happening again, I’m not going out like this’, and that was more motivation I guess than fear this time,” she said.
“I got really close to the silver, and there was a moment that I thought maybe I’ve got it. But I think after my distance flashed up, it was the realisation, then in that moment, what I’d sort of achieved, and I just let my emotions out.”
What is next for Barber? Well, she has her eye on two things – defending her World Championship title next year in Oregon and completing her Commonwealth/Olympic medal set by taking gold in Birmingham.
“I want to complete my set, so I’m going for gold there,” she said.
