The Iowa Central men picked up an 82-63 victory over the Grand View JV here Tuesday night at Hodges Fieldhouse.
Josh Baker and Kevin Taylor each recorded a double-double for the Tritons, while Bo Barber added 16 points to spearhead the effort.
The three freshmen have been mixed in with returning sophomores Jaxon Smith and Jordan Majeed through four games, helping Iowa Central to a 3-1 record.
Baker had 18 points and 13 rebounds, adding three steals, while Taylor recorded 15 and 11 with three assists. Barber also dished out six assists.
“We’re still learning,” Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. “If you just look at the score, you would see a completely different game. We’ve got a lot of growing up to do as a team before we hit the meat of our schedule.”
Baker had 16 points in the opening half with Taylor adding 10 as the Tritons raced out to a 46-28 lead. They never trailed in the game, pushing the advantage to as many as 22 with Majeed capped a 9-0 run in the second half to make it 57-35.
Majeed scored eight points with four assists while Javonte Keck and Kyler Matthias each added six. Keck, still recovering from a preseason injury, had a dunk that ignited the crowd late in the game.
“I thought we played a good first 10 minutes,” Helle said. “We let off the gas a little before halftime. But that’s a learning experience we can use moving forward.”
The Tritons shot 52 percent from the field and made eight 3-pointers while holding a 42-29 advantage in rebounds. They were also plus-28 on points in the paint.
Former Algona standout Noah Nelson had five points for Grand View.
Next action for Iowa Central will be back here on Thursday when they host Mount Mercy JV at 6 p.m.
