Patrick Bamford felt he was settling in promisingly with England when he heard a knock on his hotel-room door before last month’s game against Andorra. He opened the door to find Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Bukayo Saka standing there holding a birthday cake with lit candles.
His 28th was the day of the Andorra game, which was also his debut, and his new team-mates wanted to make him feel at home. Bamford again realised that he was becoming part of the England party when he was sitting in his room and the light went off. He got up, switched it back on and returned to his seat.
