Six years in, her hard work is starting to pay off as the salon has expanded in size, taken on more staff, has a loyal customer base and been recognised for a host of awards.
Time to be Me salon in Pagers Court, Petersfield, is owned by Karen, 53, from Liss, who bought it wanting to create somewhere that everyone feels welcome and safe from judgement.
She said: ‘When I took over it was a very traditional salon. I don’t have a background in beauty, I have a background in business consultancy.’
‘I’ve always felt a bit uncomfortable when I go into beauty salons and spas, I never knew what to ask for, so I wanted to create an environment where anyone could come and they don’t feel judged.
‘We all have things that can seem quite embarrassing and can zap people’s confidence, and it’s a place where you can ask those questions and be told what will and what won’t work, being really truthful and honest with people.’
Karen is keen on education, both with her clients and employees, to help people understand their bodies and skin and provide solutions that build self-confidence.
In her previous job she was involved in the progression and support of young women, and wanted to continue bringing that to the salon. She started taking on apprentices in 2017 and currently has six, all working towards different qualifications.
Karen said: ‘We’re so focused on training and education, I wanted to make the salon somewhere where young women could learn skills, grow their confidence and become what they are really capable of.’
The salon has monthly educational events for anyone interested in their treatments and training and development courses for employees which happen every week.
Karen said over lockdown it gave her a chance to rethink everything, and now the salon is excited to show off its new website, new team members and has expanded its facilities and menu to incorporate more aesthetics treatments.
As well as converting the building next door into a nail spa, the salon has new state-of-the-art machines offering hydro-facials, t-shape treatments and microneedling amongst others.
Also as part of the expansion, Karen has welcomed a nurse practitioner, with 25 years of experience in the aesthetics industry, to the team who offers injectables and other aesthetics treatments.
