Boise Mobile Equipment, a Boise-based maker of wildland fire trucks, added investment from a large publicly-traded company.
Oshkosh Inc., and its Pierce Manufacturing division completed the investment in BME, and the companies will launch a “strategic alliance.”
Pierce, a leading maker of fire trucks, and BME, which competes in the wildland space, will work together. The investment will help Boise Mobile transition from a factory-direct selling model to instead sell its rigs and equipment at dealerships.
“BME prides itself (on) being a leader in the wildland apparatus market,” BME Fire Trucks president Chad Moffat said. “We believe our alliance with Pierce will enhance our ability to create and develop better products, provide accessible service, and create more opportunities for our customers in the future.”
Terms of the investment were not announced.

BME is also working on a consolidation of its various facilities around Boise to a large new facility along Apple St. near Federal Way. BME currently operates facilities across the Boise Bench.
The campus is the former home of the MotivePower plant – which closed in 2019 when owner Wabtec moved manufacturing out of the area. Permit applications note BME will consolidate from three local facilities to the Apple St. plant. The large 48-acre site has a wide variety of warehouses and other structures formerly used for locomotive manufacturing.
BME started in 1990, with investment from Ron Yanke and the Yanke family. Yanke died in 2004, and the family later sold BME to Chad Moffat in 2014. Moffat’s company Extendobed made components for the BME trucks and under Moffat’s ownership, the company launched aggressive expansion, according to a 2017 story from the Idaho Busines Review.
Oshkosh is a Wisconsin-based conglomerate with a number of subsidiaries in manufacturing, defense, and aerospace. (It’s not related to the children’s clothing maker Oshkosh B’Gosh.)
