Here at 303 Magazine, we strive to celebrate local individuals and businesses that actively make a positive impact in our communities. With inclusivity in mind, many curly-haired Coloradans might agree that they’ve had their fair share of frustration when trying to find skilled salons and stylists dedicated to naturally curly hair.
It’s also important to note that the frustration may be rooted in society’s dismissal of curls — especially of Black hair through history. In fact, the CROWN Act is legally helping put an end to hair discrimination in America with Colorado formally passing the act into law this past September.
So, if you’ve had a particularly difficult time finding professionals who actually know how to work with curls and find it their passion, we’ve compiled a list of six notable salons and hair stylists who’ve made it their mission to help curly locals look and feel their best.

The Lowdown: Having found her passion for hair at just 13 years old, Diana Yakhlef finds it a joy to work with several different clients at Lucky Lu’s every day. She’s an expert colorist and an advanced trained stylist, having attended the world-renowned Sassoon Academy in Seattle, the American Crew Academy for men’s haircuts, the Matrix Color Academy NYC and has even trained with the prestigious global hair care company Davines. The Lowdown: If you’re looking for extensive curly hair wisdom, education and a full line-up of Certified Curl Experts, then it’d be in your favor to check out More Than Curly Salon. Husband and wife duo Melissa and Jason Vaz first opened the salon in Aurora as the only chemical-free natural salon in the Rocky Mountain region in 2011 where Ouidad, Moroccanoil, Paul Mitchell Awapuhi and Design Essentials haircare products have been methodically used. The team strives to help curly locals to fall in love with their locks by styling all-types of textures — from kinky curls to soft waves. Owner and lead stylist of Devana Salon, Erik Emblen is a Certified Advanced DevaCurl Hairstylist in the Glendale neighborhood that’s an expert at cutting and coloring a full range of textured hair. The Colorado Springs based salon has valued the importance of education and specialized skills to garner haircut and styling services with organic beauty products in its arsenal. The Lowdown: Located in her own private studio inside of Indie Salons, Jessica Lambert is an expert curl specialist that also has technical savvy skills with men’s hair and women’s short hair. She revealed that she chose to drop out of art school and focus on hair — as it was a good fit for her being an artist already — since she was unable to focus on her art the way she wanted to. Interestingly, new clients commonly ask her why she specializes in curls due to having naturally straight hair. Lambert told us that her dedication to curls became a perfect medium to create, coming from a place of deep love and appreciation for art.”Curls are unique, unpredictable and take real patience and vision to create a curly haircut. “We’re still alive,” the words from Billy Joe Armstrong reverberated throughout Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, hanging over the fanfare, like fog in the night sky. The cheers of tens of thousands of attendees collectively exhaling a year of delay and rejoicing in a long-awaited return greeted his words with no shortage of enthusiasm. If you have any affinity for having a good time and getting your heart rate up, then you’d fit right in with the Friday night crowd at Big Wild. The entire show from start to finish felt like the well-oiled car engine revving. The three insanely talented openers, Mild Minds, Cannons and Bob Moses worked in overdrive to prepare the crowd for the eventual climax set to the tune of Big Wild’s smash hit “6’s to 9’s”. As we brace ourselves for another year of debauchery courtesy of the Underground Music Showcase (UMS), first thing is first — you’ve got to go in with a game plan. This year’s festival taking place from August 27 – 29 is already sold-out, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, things are also scaled back a bit, with 16 venues playing host to the hundreds of bands on the lineup. On Thursday, August 5, The Denver Burger Battle returned for its tenth iteration. Once again — after a year-long hiatus — the Tivoli Quad was filled with smiling throngs of hungry burger enthusiasts. The array, 1,500 strong, meandered through 16 booths, each representing what is arguably some of the finest talents in the city. More than a few folks were dressed in theme, though everyone was clearly on the same page, whether fitted to the nines or more casually clad. The wait is finally over. The long-awaited Denver off-shoot of Meow Wolf will finally open to guests on September 17, 2021. After years of watching the building rise between Colfax Ave. the I-25 overpass, Denverites will get their turn to discover the mysteries of Meow Wolf’s quirky art installations.
