For some people, the test of a great shampoo and conditioner is how the products make their hair look. For others, it’s how they make their hair feel. In my experience, finding products that provide stellar results in both areas can be a little tricky. Smooth, shiny hair that feels hydrated and weightless? It’s a difficult balance to strike. When you have fine hair, color-treated hair, or curly hair, it can be even more challenging to find a product that ticks both boxes.
No matter what, choosing from thousands of products to find your perfect combo can be overwhelming. That’s why Allure created the Best of Beauty Awards, so you can skip the trial-and-error process and go right to the good stuff. Here’s what Allure editors recommend:
For me, the 2021 Best of Beauty–winning Suave Pink Smooth Performer Shampoo and Conditioner turned out to be exactly what I needed for my fine, frizz-prone hair. Right off the bat, the in-shower experience of using the products exceeded expectations. The shampoo had just the right amount of lather, and the scent was refreshing without being overly fragrant. The best part, though, was also the most important part: the difference I noticed in my hair. As soon as it dried, I could immediately tell it was shinier, smoother, and bouncier than it had been in weeks. Even with zero styling effort whatsoever, I was impressed with how much better my hair looked and felt.
My efforts to achieve soft, shiny hair in the past have often resulted in limp, frizz-prone, or greasy locks, but not with these products. According to the brand, it’s the Amino Acid Complex in the shampoo and conditioner that strengthens the hair while helping to protect it from breakage, leaving hair silky smooth, more manageable and ready to style into any look. One thing is for sure about this formula: It kept my hair smooth during the steamiest, hottest weeks of summer, and that’s a win in my book.
Editorial assistant and curl connoisseur Talia Gutierrez fell in love with the Nexxus Curl Define collection, the brand’s first-ever curly hair line formulated exclusively for curly hair, and particularly to 2021 Best of Beauty winners Curl Define Shampoo and Conditioner, which were created when the team discovered that curly and straight strands themselves don’t only have different structures, but the proteins inside them also do, and need to be cared for as such. The research behind the Curl Define line took more than a decade to develop.
Enriched with an exclusive ProteinFusion™ blend with silk protein and marula oil, the Curl Define sulfate-free shampoo gently cleanses without stripping hair. The rich and creamy conditioner adds moisture back to the follicle, which helps with detangling, while adding hydration and shine to curl patterns from 3A to 4C. “Since I’ve been home so much over the last year and a half, I've spent more time than ever hydrating my curls with pampering, moisturizing products, like this shampoo and conditioning duo,” Gutierrez explains. “It's completely transformed the look and feel of my waves and locks of hair, making wash day something to look forward to every week.”
After going bright blonde, associate beauty director Sarah Kinonen found 2021 Best of Beauty winners TRESemmé Keratin Repair Shampoo and Conditioner were the perfect solution for her dry and brittle strands.
“On a spur-of-the-moment salon visit this summer, I decided to go blonde — like really blonde. And while I love my bright new identity, I'm not particularly thrilled with the newfound dryness that comes with it,” Kinonen said. “After a shampoo-and-condition session using the Keratin Repair Shampoo and Conditioner, made with TRESemmé’s proprietary Bond Plex technology to strengthen and repair bonds, my straw-like strands were instantly transformed into shiny silk, making me love my color-treated hair all over again.”
